3M Scotch-Weld EC-3333 B/A is a high-performance structural adhesive used to replace mechanical fasteners, screws, rivets, and spot welds in aircraft assembly. It is specifically designed for bonding metals and plastics in critical structural areas where high vibration resistance and environmental durability are required.
The adhesive features a simple 2:1 mix ratio by volume (100:49 by weight), which simplifies preparation. It provides a 20-minute work life at room temperature ($23^\circ\text{C}$), giving technicians sufficient time to position and adjust parts precisely before the adhesive begins to set.
One of the standout features of EC-3333 B/A is its outstanding hot-wet resistance. It maintains high bond integrity even when exposed to high humidity and elevated temperatures, ensuring that structural bonds do not degrade in tropical climates or demanding flight cycles.
At room temperature ($22^\circ\text{C}$), the adhesive achieves handling strength in 2–3 hours and is fully cured in 5 to 7 days. For faster turnaround, the cure can be accelerated with heat; for example, it reaches full performance in approximately 2 hours at $49^\circ\text{C}$ ($120^\circ\text{F}$).
This "toughened" epoxy delivers impressive mechanical performance, featuring a tensile shear strength of approximately 5500 psi at room temperature and high peel strength. These properties allow it to absorb impact and resist crack propagation better than standard, more brittle epoxy systems.
