LOCTITE® 401

LOCTITE® 401 is a fast-fixturing instant adhesive (industrial grade) designed for the assembly of a wide range of materials where uniform stress distribution and high tensile and/or shear strength are required. Using primer LOCTITE® SF 770, the assembly of difficult-to-bond materials (PP, PE, PTFE) is possible. In addition, it is suited for bonding porous materials such as wood, paper, leather and fabric.

Applications

1. Preparation – Cleaning

It is recommended to use LOCTITE® SF 7063/7064 to degrease and clean surfaces prior to applying the adhesive.

2. Preparation – Priming

To improve adhesion on difficult to bond plastic surfaces, apply LOCTITE® SF 7239 or LOCTITE® SF 770 to the bond area by brushing or dipping. Avoid applying excess primer. Allow the primer to dry.

3. Preparation – Activation

If cure speed is too slow, use appropriate activator LOCTITE® SF 7458 or LOCTITE® SF 7455 (see cure speed vs activator graph in TDS). Apply activator to one bond surface by spray, brush or dipping (not primed surfaces). Allow the activator to dry.

4. Application

Apply adhesive onto one side/part.

5. Assembly

Assemble parts immediately. The parts should be accurately located as the short fixture time leaves little opportunity for adjustment. Bond should be held or clamped until the adhesive has fixtured. Hint: if necessary, excess product can be cured by activator LOCTITE® SF 7458 or LOCTITE® SF 7455. Spray or drop activator onto excess product.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Loctite 401 and what are its best applications?

Loctite 401 is a low-viscosity, surface-insensitive instant adhesive (cyanoacrylate). it is designed for the assembly of difficult-to-bond materials that require uniform stress distribution and high tensile or shear strength. It is ideal for quick repairs on plastics, rubber, metals, and porous materials like wood or paper.

Being surface-insensitive means Loctite 401 can bond acidic or porous surfaces (such as wood, leather, or chrome-plated parts) that often inhibit the curing process of standard instant glues. It ensures a reliable, fast bond even in low-humidity conditions or on challenging substrates.

Loctite 401 offers an extremely fast fixture speed, typically bonding most substrates in 3 to 10 seconds. Full functional strength is usually achieved within 24 hours, depending on the gap size and the materials being joined.

Loctite 401 is engineered to withstand temperatures up to 120°C (250°F). This improved thermal resistance makes it superior to many other instant adhesives that lose their bond strength at much lower temperatures, allowing it to be used in closer proximity to engine or electronic components.
