Ardrox 185L Alkaline Rust & Scale Remover SAE ARP 1755B

Ardrox 185L (SAE ARP 1755B) is a highly alkaline concentrated solution in water containing sequestrants. It is also available as a powder under the name Ardox 185.

Ardox 185L is primary intended for the removal of heavy rust and scale from ferrous components in immersion tanks but it is also capable to remove oil, grease and some air-dried paints. It will not attack or cause hydrogen embrittlement in ferrous alloys and there is markedly less tendency for re-rusting to occur than with acid pickling.

When used in conjunction with the adequate other Ardox specialties, Ardox 185L can be used to remove scale from hot-end jet engine components. It can also be cleaning parts of titanium.

Applications

  • Jet Engine Maintenance

    • Removes scale from hot-end jet engine components.
    • Cleans titanium parts efficiently.
  • Rust & Scale Removal

    • Ideal for ferrous components in immersion tanks.
    • Eliminates heavy rust, scale, oil, grease, and some air-dried paints.
    • Reduces re-rusting compared to acid pickling.
  • Application & Usage

    • Used at 30-50% concentration in water (200-375 g/L).
    • Must be dissolved in cold water (exothermic reaction heats up to 50-60°C).
    • Applied by immersion at 82-93°C with mechanical agitation.
    • Light rust removal: ~10 minutes; Heavy rust: ~1 hour.
  • Post-Cleaning & Protection

    • Requires thorough water rinsing after use.
    • Recommended to apply Ardrox 3-series for protection against re-rusting.
    • Pre-degreasing with Ardrox 6-series extends bath life for heavily contaminated parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ardrox 185L and where is it used in aviation?

Ardrox 185L is a highly concentrated alkaline liquid cleaner formulated for the removal of heavy carbon, scale, and stubborn metallic oxides. It is primarily used in aircraft engine overhaul shops to clean hot-section components made of heat-resistant alloys, such as stainless steel, titanium, and nickel-based superalloys.

As a liquid concentrate, Ardrox 185L is easier to handle, mixes instantly with water, and eliminates the health hazards associated with breathing in chemical dust. It ensures a more consistent bath concentration and prevents the "clumping" issues often found with powdered alternatives in immersion tanks.

Ardrox 185L is qualified to the DEF STAN 03-2 (Grade 2) specification. It is also approved by major engine manufacturers including Rolls-Royce (CSS 240) and GE (C04-142) for use in chemical cleaning and de-scaling processes.

No, Ardrox 185L is a strong alkaline cleaner and should not be used on aluminum, magnesium, or galvanized surfaces as it will cause rapid etching and damage to the metal. It is strictly intended for ferrous metals, titanium, and nickel alloys found in high-temperature engine zones.
