Frequently Asked Questions

What is 3M Aerospace Sealant AC-251 used for?

3M AC-251 is a two-part, quick-curing polysulfide sealant specifically formulated for sealing aircraft windshields, canopies, and windows. Its "non-crazing" formula makes it safe for use on acrylic, polycarbonate, and glass transparencies, providing a durable, weather-resistant exterior mold line seal.

No, 3M AC-251 contains no added solvents. This is a critical feature because solvents can cause "crazing" (fine surface cracking) in sensitive aircraft plastics like acrylic and polycarbonate. By being solvent-free, AC-251 ensures the optical clarity and structural integrity of the aircraft's windows.

3M AC-251 is available in several work-life versions to suit different repair needs:

  • B-1/2: 30-minute work life; cures in 4 hours.
  • B-1: 1-hour work life; cures in 7 hours.
  • B-2: 2-hour work life; cures in 9 hours.
  • Note: Cure times are based on standard conditions of 25°C and 50% relative humidity.

Yes, AC-251 is formulated to resist UV degradation and weather exposure, which is essential for exterior seals. It also features outstanding resistance to aviation fuel and petroleum products, allowing it to maintain a pressure-tight seal in demanding flight environments.
